Global Relief’s vision:

  • That surviving communities of disasters take ownership of their own emotional and physical reconstruction and reach out to others

Global Relief’s mission:

  • To respond speedily to requests from selected disaster-stricken communities by sending skilled people and resources at short notice.
  • To continue relief efforts beyond the initial Search-and-Rescue phase, empowering the affected communities to take ownership of their own reconstruction.

Global Relief’s role:

  • Facilitating professional volunteers to empower disaster-stricken communities to take ownership of their own physical and psycho-social reconstruction.

Why psycho-social?

  • Expressed need not addressed
  • When you are satisfied, your bucket is full
  • The water represents your emotional well-being
  • Trauma & shock can cause your bucket to start leaking
  • Leak = Vuza (in Zulu)
  • Vusa means to wake up & bloom (in Zulu)

Cost structure

  • Voluntarism
  • Donations in kind as far as possible (E.g. air tickets, equipment etc.)
  • Remuneration for volunteers serving for longer periods
  • Office overheads, training etc.
